Abstract
Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is characterized by fear of negative evaluation and anxiety and maladaptive response to social situations. Negative self-image plays key role in development and maintenance of social anxiety, and is derived from early memories of social failure and self-concept encapsulated in those memories and image. This study investigated the effect of Imagery Rescripting (IR) on implicit self-esteem, negative self-image, and whether positive change in self-belief can induce adaptive change in emotion regulation (ER) in SAD. Twenty-seven participants are selected from screening and structured diagnostic clinical interview and sixteen and eleven participants are randomly assigned to treatment condition and wait-list control condition respectively. Pre- to Post-treatment differences were seen between treatment and wait-list participants across self-report measures about negative self-image, ER during anxiety-provoking social task, and Implicit Association Test (IAT). Twenty-three participants finished Pre- and Post-treatment test and followings are identified; IR made significant change in negative self-image and reappraising of ER, but not implicit self-esteem. Specific tendency of treatment change could be related with treatment mechanism and treatment period of IR. At the end, limitations and implications of this study are discussed.
